Why Cork?

Why Cork?

What is Cork and why is my Yoga Mat made of it?

Over my years of practicing and teaching Yoga, I have learned how incredibly important the surface you practice on is. Whether you practice all the time or just occasionally, your Yoga mat will be your place of sweat, rest, comfort, focus, concentration, balance and movement; a very intimate space. How can you find equanimity and calm if your mat smells bad or keeps slipping or warping or is generally not working for you??

Therefore, Cork.

Made from the bark of a tree, this natural material has revolutionized the wine, home decor, furniture and office industry and we are now hoping it will take over the world of Yoga too. Practicing on my I Am That Cork Alignment Mat has changed. my. life.

Here just a few reasons why we used Cork:

RENEWABLE RESOURCE: No tree is cut down to harvest cork. Hand harvested every 9 to 12 years. Each tree can produce cork for about 200 years.

BIODEGRADABLE: Cork is recyclable & biodegradable. Any cork waste from production is reused and ground to make other cork products. #zerowaste

MAGICAL MATERIAL: Cork is anti-static, water-resistant, & resilient. Suberin makes cork naturally resist dust, water and insects! Cork absorbs energy on impact and quickly regains its structure.

ANTIMICROBIAL: Cork is highly antibacterial. One studied showed almost 100% bacterial reduction of Staphylococcus aureus, after 90 minutes of incubation.

NO CHEMICALS OR TOXINS: No PVCs and other chemicals that harm you & our planet. So-called eco-friendly TPE or other materials are plastic. Cork and natural rubber is all you get with your I Am That – Yoga mat.

Sounds good doesn’t it?

Acknowledgement of Country

I Am That – Yoga acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nations as the Traditional Owners of this unceded land on which we practice, teach and share Yoga: Yálla-birr-ang [Collingwood]. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and the Aboriginal Elders of other communities, as well as all the teachers that passed down this ancient wisdom and the daily practices of Yoga.

We are committed to stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the fight for justice and real land rights and to pay the rent as a portion of our revenues.

Our luck of being able to legally live and earn on these lands is not taken for granted. We are proud to support the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre with a portion of our revenues, acknowledging that safety and security are a human right.
